Innovative Shelf Provides Space for 6 NODE ATCA Blades in a Compact 6U Shelf - San Diego and Las Vegas - June 16, 2008 - Asis (www.asis-pro.com), a global designer and manufacturer of complete enclosure systems for AdvancedTCA, CompactPCI and custom applications, today announced the introduction of its new Perform Series 6-slot AdvancedTCA shelf. Specifically designed for high-density systems, the shelf offers greater performance, reliability and availability than current solutions found on the market today. The unique and revolutionary design of the new Asis 6-slot AdvancedTCA shelf provides space for 6 node ATCA blades in a 6U (10.5 inch) shelf making it well suited for telecom and data communications products that require high availability, fault management and real-time performance. Moreover, HUB functionality is already integrated in the standard shelf management boards. The full featured shelf manager is based on Pigeon PointTM 500 shelf management module (ShMM) and features a unique HPI-based software module, offering seamless access to the shelf control and management interface. The new shelf also features unique distribution of sensors, and comprehensive alarm I/O. Asis' proprietary Basic shelf manager is based on a PowerQuick processor and cost reduced ShMM. Lastly, Asis' fan control board automatically controls chassis temperature using dedicated temperature sensors located inside the chassis or controlled by the ATCA blade/switch using I2C bus. With support for over 300 watts per slot and compliance with the strict NEBS (GR63) cooling requirements, the Perform Series 6-slot shelf surpasses the current solutions found in the market both in normal stage and in any failure condition. Featuring a fault-tolerant airflow design, two 38mm fan trays with eight high performance fans each and patented air flow technology, the Perform 6-Slot shelf push-pull cooling maximizes air flow to assure the highest-level of heat reduction. Asis' advanced cooling scheme also enables customization of the air flow according to user's specific needs - allowing extreme high power dissipation from selected slots. For applications requiring more than 300 watts per slot, the Perform Series airflow can be easily customized to meet specific thermal requirements. The AC/DC 6-Slot Perform Series also features a 10gbps backplane that exceeds the AdvancedTCA standard while ensuring signal integrity. These enhanced capabilities are based on extensive practical experience and comprehensive Signal Integrity studies which led to the unique optimization of the backplane. In addition, the new shelf also incorporates three redundant and hot-swappable 1500 watt power supplies. For DC applications, the shelf also features hot-swappable and redundant -48VDC PEM. | The Asis fan control board is an independent platform module that monitors the chassis temperature and control the fans speed accordingly. The board is hot swappable and includes circuitry that detects a failed fan. This failure will result in a red lamp indication on the fan tray front panel. Usually, when no failure exist, the fan tray status led is green. User selectable initial fans speed and temperature vs. fan speed correlation slope. | ||

Asis in CompactPCI and AdvancedTCA Systems by Anne Fisher |

Asis is a global designer and manufacturer of complete enclosure systems for AdvancedTCA, CompactPCI, and custom applications. We spoke to Kevin Washington, VP Sales Asis North America, about the company’s new Effective Series AdvancedTCA chassis, which according to Asis targets cost-sensitive yet demanding applications.
A. We had two goals in mind. One, to provide a high quality, highly available, and reliable product that met the cost target of a development system. This would allow our customers to use the product as a development platform, and two, by simply scaling, adding components, to have a releasable telco grade product that can go right into production. The design intent was two-fold; one is to be very cost-effective, which we have certainly managed to do, and to have the performance that is required for a deployable product. Q. What were your customers telling you about their needs for something that was cost-sensitive but still had to meet the AdvancedTCA standard? A. When we questioned our customers, we found that a lot of the platforms that were currently available were introductory products that had been manufactured almost as a proof of concept and then productized. Such products did meet the price point in some cases but were not intended to be deployable products. So the market was flooded with development systems that were not necessarily deployable. We wanted to bring to that market a development unit that could be taken into production. Q. For what types of applications were the development systems not full fledged enough? A. They did not meet NEBS requirements for cooling and redundancy. The most important was the cooling requirement mandated by AdvancedTCA: 200 W per slot, even with a single fan failure – that is the shortcoming of most development systems, they do not meet that. Also having dual power entry modules, dual shelf managers, and dual power supplies led people towards meeting the redundancy requirements that AdvancedTCA dictates. Q. What is the chief difference between the Asis Perform Series and the Asis Effective Series? A. The primary difference is the Effective Series was designed to meet the AdvancedTCA specification while providing a very cost-effective development system that could go into production. The Perform Series chassis was designed to be a very cost-effective or high value solution. However, it is designed in every way to exceed the AdvancedTCA specification. For example, the Perform Series are designed to dissipate 300 W per slot and also the backplanes are designed to operate at 10 Gig. Q. What applications are you targeting with Perform? A. Although AdvancedTCA was developed to address the needs of the telecom market, enterprise level customers, as well as the military, who require AC applications, are looking at AdvancedTCA because of the ability to dissipate up to 300 W per slot. Q. In some cases can’t the enterprise folks get by with a little less stringency? A. Absolutely. That is another differentiator in the Effective Series; it is scalable, with one power supply, one shelf manager. We have an option for a basic shelf manager that simply controls the fans—it is ideally suited for the enterprise-level customer. Q. What would be next on the enterprise level customer’s wish list to make products more enterprise-like? A. The big differentiator is AC input. In addition there is the ability to have redundant power supplies or a single power supply if need be. The next step would be no shelf manager or even a more simplified fan control scheme that does not necessarily communicate via the IPMB. Q. Do you see yourselves headed in that direction? A. We do have enterprise-level customers that are pulling us in that direction. The Effective Series’ basic shelf manager is a scaled down version of our current shelf manager. The next step would be to have something even simpler. Q. Will you have to make some choices as to what markets you address? A. We are positioned now to have a breadth of product to cover the ones we are targeting: military, medical, telecom, and enterprise. We are aware that modifications to specific markets and specific customers will be required. If we find a big enough niche in one of those markets for one of the modified products, then that would be a product that we would consider standardizing. Q. Are you following MicroTCA’s path through life and what are your thoughts about that? A. Yes we are. As we did with AdvancedTCA, we want to have a very thoughtful response to the MicroTCA market, so we certainly have conceptual designs that we are ready to act on, but we are pulling back a bit to really see where that market is going and what the end customers will require in terms of configuration. There are many many options right now for MicroTCA because it is in its infancy. Q. Do you think sometimes the term “family” gets used too loosely? A. I think it does. For example, there are product families that are really not very cohesive. They may target different slot counts, but they are not really a true family. The Effective Series is a true family of products. When I say that I mean that shelf managers, power supplies, and power entry modules all are part of that family, and the two-slot, five-slot, and 14-slot chassis would use the same power supply and shelf managers. There truly is an economy of scale that contributes to the cost effectiveness of the products.
